St. Croix Festival Theatre

This theatre has a lovely sense of community and is invested in doing interesting works that offer opportunities for lots of different kinds of people. Housing is with host homes which comes with its ups and downs. They are successfully working on improving their compensation, though the money is still on the lower end compared to other regional theatres. The area is beautiful and rural, and only 1 hour away from Minneapolis/St. Paul. If at all possible, bring a car because it is pretty much impossible to do anything/get anywhere without a vehicle. That being said, leadership takes actors on grocery runs and other errands, so you aren't fully stranded. All in all, the vibes are super lovely. I loved working here and would do so again.

The number one knock against this theatre is their pay is very low. They are a lovely team of people, who are working very hard and are certainly understaffed, as it goes in non-union theatre. There is a new producing director who is trying to do some new and exciting kinds of works out there. They have plans to reclaim their larger theatre, and the path is set to expand and do larger works, become a bigger presence, and get to the point where they can pay more. That is where they are. I throughly enjoyed my time here. They treated me like family, the rehearsal and show hours were spaced out and very reasonable. They have a good collection of host housing for out of town actors. The area is quite lovely. If a show speaks to you, I would recommend this place to anyone who can afford doing the contract. I really hope they are able to find that growth and achieve their St. Croix dreams. (edited)
