- Intern, 3-5 years ago
Whoooo boy. My summer with BTG as an intern was probably the worst summer of my life. I really wish I was exaggerating, but I was broke, sick, and overworked for the time that I was there. Intern housing was horrid. There were 25 of us living in two apartments and a downstairs bedroom. It was 4 to a room (dorm style) broken down in the following: 12 in one apartment (1 bathroom, 1 fridge) 9 in another (1 bathroom, 1 fridge) and 4 in a downstairs bedroom (1 bathroom, 1 mini fridge). Some rooms didn’t have doors and instead a small sheet separated you from everyone else, so hopefully no fans that were on (to provide air since they didn’t give us any AC units unless you were an equity actor or acting intern) would cause the curtain to blow aside while you’re changing! There was an extra little building that had a small room with a bathroom that we would sometimes hangout in (or even sleep in if someone needed the privacy). The pay. Oh man, the pay. I was a general technician and I made $100 a week. Actually, after taxes, I made $64.35 a week. Sometimes I had to choose between paying for my phone bill or buying something other than pasta to eat. This was especially horrible as a general technician, because you change departments. Sometimes you’re on scenic or sometimes you’re on lights. You should be getting more than $100 a week for having to learn ALL the departments. Working conditions: the hours were horrid and definitely crossed into some “probably not legal” ranges for the interns. In terms of the environment, though, it wasn’t bad. You’re working in an old barn when you’re on scenic, props, or paints. The scene shop folks have fans strategically laid out so a breeze runs through. It would be tough but the crew would boost morale with music and having fun while being as safe as possible. The prop shop, which was run by an exceptionally amazing human, was the coolest area being in the basement. Lights got lucky (also run by amazing folks) cause they were in the MainStage theatre, so they had AC. The people I met made the summer bearable but that’s the only saving grace. There was a reason that a tradition of being “washed of BTG” happened on your last day of employment. Yes, they poured a bucket of water on you to cleanse you of the summer.
