Cortland Rep Theatre

I have worked at CRT several times over the past ten years. Good folks. Good work. Good times. I always return when I receive an offer, even though it's a long haul from my home in the South. You want to work here.

My favorite theatre to work at. Cortland Rep has a genuine investment in the wellbeing of its actors and in the beauty and heart of their productions. Housing is incredible - roomy and spacious kitchens, and it's a cute town to live in for the summer. Everyone working there is just so kind and wonderful. I really can't recommend it enough. They also hire really wonderful groups for their productions, and you will make lifelong friends.

Excellent company, the quality of the work is top tier, and everyone - actors, designers, technicians - is treated very well. I can't recommend CRT enough - you will be proud of the work done there, and you will enjoy the people and atmosphere while you are doing it.

Took a onetime gig at Cortland in 2006-7, thinking I would probably only do one show and be done, on to the next company. Since, I have done somewhere in the neighborhood of 7-8 roles/summers at Cortland spread out over these past years? Each summer has been a different and great experience. It has become like coming home in a way....Highly professional and organized, with strong leadership and teams. High creativity, collegiality, and fun. Time and process are respected and expected, very reflective of the profession and its levels, and actors are respected members of a team. Any production drama or hurdles are kept out of the rehearsal process as much as possible and we get down to business-you can travel many creative miles in just one day of rehearsal.......If you've worked in the industry for a while, you know this is not always the case. Housing is great-Cortland is a cool little city with lots in walking distance from housing, and company members are great about sharing rides. The Cortland country side area is truly beautiful and audiences, community, and board members are positively involved and enthusiastic. I don't gush much in this world, but Cortland is a definite gem of a regional theatre and a great working experience.....I now count several members of this organization as collaborators and friends that I don't get to see nearly enough. Come prepared. Come with an open mind. This is a great experience and a strong stepping stone. Wide variety of performers and experience levels all learning together.

I worked at CRT as a Performing Intern and later as a Guest Contract. I loved my experience with this theatre. The entire creative team was so nice and supportive of everyone. During my first summer I was part of the intern program, so I was there the whole summer and (I know this is so cliche but) we really were like a big company family. The internship was my first contract. I thought this was an amazing transition into the professional theatre world, due to the kindness of the staff. HOUSING! Housing was great! You live in an apartment complex with other company members—you get placed in an apartment with 1-2 other people (you get your own room). It’s walking distance from the rehearsal space and downtown area (with cute restaurants and bars) They give you plates and cups, etc. The only catch was there was no AC but they gave me a fan and I never found it to be too hot at all! Having a car definitely makes your days off more enjoyable. The Finger Lakes are close by so there are many things to keep you busy! (Hiking trails, waterfalls, ice cream shops (shout out to Super Cream!) and plenty more!

Loved the family environment with a professional ethos. Their "guild" makes you feel "at home" and truly valued. Intimate performance venue in a beautiful park setting (makes for lovely picnics in between 2-show days). Phenomenal creative & design teams. Helpful to have a car, but not required. Rehearsal space is within walking distance of housing (and there is a YMCA on the walk - that gives CRT folk a deal). Worked there for 4-7 week contracts for 5 different summers - and would return.

Worked at this theatre for an entire season then came back a couple years later for a single production. I had a wonderful experience both times. The creative teams they put together truly care about both putting up good work and treating their casts with kindness and respect. One of the most profession non-eq theaters I've ever worked at.

Worked for the company for 3 months and had a great experience! Housing is fair and pay is fair for an internship. The CRT community was my favorite part, the made us all feel so welcome and loved! 10/10 would work there again.

Amazing venue to work in. They are understanding and help to the best of their ability to help you with learning curves. Pay is low, but is livable. The experience there is worth it though. The guild are very nice people. 10/10 experience would 100% work their again even with the low pay.

Wonderful people to work with, and we all had fun on our productions. Pay is lower than average, but is certainly not abhorrently so. As mentioned by others, you do have to help strike the previous show after the closing night performance, but the guild does provide food.

Surprised to say I enjoyed this theater a lot. I actually got paid more here than I ever did at another major nonunion theater, but it's still a little low. You will have to do strike as the previous poster said, but the runs are so short, it's fun. Their rehearsal space downtown is nice, the theater itself is fun! It's in a park not actually in Cortland but on the way, not great backstage space, but a cool thrust stage. Cortland itself is a small upstate NY college town. Some good coffee shops. If you have a car, the Finger Lakes aren't too far.

Pay is pretty low but for a non union theater they are extremely professional and respectful of your time. You do have to participate in strikes which run late into the night ofc so something to be aware of. Overall great experience here!
