Great Plains Theatre

I loved my time at GPT! Highly recommend working here, especially for young professionals looking to gain resume credits. GPT is a reputable company full of history. Their original space burned down in 2014 and they have created a little theatre in an unconventional space. Smaller crowds, but a very supportive community and team. The AD is new and full of fresh ideas. He asked us to do exit interviews and was open to just listening to us. As an actor, I have never experienced that and we all appreciated it. I am excited to see what happens with the theatre under his guidance. They provide housing for actors in their actor house and in host homes. Pay ranges for each person, but they pay weekly. I know someone who was paid $325 and another person who was paid $500. The biggest con is costuming. I can't wait to see this place grow. I only had minor issues here and will recommend it to anyone looking for work. I hope to be back! (edited)

I felt so supported and taken care of at the theatre! It’s definitely in a more conservative area, so as a POC I was worried but in town it felt like I was a celebrity— the community loves GPT. The costuming isn’t great, but I had such a blast working here and met some amazingly talented and hardworking people. Would definitely work here again! Definitely a perk to have your own car and live in the company house!

Not great pay, but the people are incredibly kind and my time there was relaxing! Don't expect big crowds for your shows; the theatre seats 125ish and some days we only had 25 audience members show up. It's a good place to go and get credits on your resume. The process of each show is short; mine was a week and a half rehearsal and then two weekends of shows. I had to live with a host family which wasn't super ideal, but overall their space was nice and I had my own room and bathroom. I believe the pay is $300-$375/week and they give you a travel stipend and gym membership. Not a lot of restaurants in town and the hours in which they are open are limited so be prepared to cook and grocery shop. Helpful if you have your own car.

One of my favorite regional theatre experiences. The previous AD is the kindest, most generous director who attracted a high caliber of talent and fostered a community-minded rehearsal process. Housing ranges from actor housing to host houses - on my contract two people did share the living room as their sleeping space. Actors have access to a company vehicle, pool and hot tub, gym membership, and rehearsal/self-tape space. Abilene, KS is a very small conservative town so this is something to be aware of if this makes you (very justifiably) uncomfortable. GPT was a thoroughly positive working environment for me and I would welcome the opportunity to work there again. :)

Absolutely fantastic. AD is the most diplomatic and understanding person I’ve worked under in the theatre so far in my career. When the AC went out in our actor housing, because of the usual “I’m scared of bringing up issues because I’m an actor” fear. I hesistated to say anything, but when I worked up the courage to request a repair, it was dealt with within 24 hours and I was made to feel my request was reasonable and totally fair. Community members are THE KINDEST. A wonderful opportunity to take a break from the din of big city hustle, make great friends, and make art for a supremely appreciative community.

The AD is super nice and super organized, which was amazing! At GPT it was clear that the staff makes something out of nothing and this AD does so much to make the theater a part of this little community. There are high school kids working as interns in tech and/or cast in the shows, and local connections contributed food and treats for the cast and crew. Working at GPT I felt respected, cared for, and listened to, which made it a much more joyful experience than many other places I've worked. Housing has a range with some actors sharing a house within walking distance to the theater and some in host homes slightly further out. There's a company vehicle for actors to share, free gym membership, small town things. In general, working at GPT felt rewarding and fun, and I highly reccomend keeping an eye out for their auditions!
