Ogunquit Playhouse

One show at the Playhouse, one at the Music Hall, and a subsequent admin position. Having been on both sides of the curtain for most of my career, my experience at Ogunquit was better than most. Housing was a crap shoot early on but has been improved exponentially to date. Regional venues, unless the housing is brand-new, all struggle to rent/purchase/provide housing that is acceptable outside of your own living space that you’ve left behind for several weeks. It’s the biggest line-item above everything else in every regional venue. The Ogunquit Playhouse is 90 years old as of 2023 and an historic landmark. Yes, the original dressing rooms are small, but they’re not dirty or crumbling. They’ve been occupied by more film, television, and Broadway stars than you’d imagine. It’s the original summer stock theatre, of the original Straw Hat Circuit, that is continuously improving conditions and, despite the optics of wealth mentioned in this thread, has managed to be one of a handful of theatres that not only reopened in 2021, but continued to produce exceptional live theatre post-Covid without a single outbreak throughout 2021-22. The single-star rating for the accident that occurred at the Music Hall during Million Dollar Quartet is unfortunate to say the least. To say that ‘nothing was done about it’ is hugely presumptuous. ‘Nearly killed’ is not killed nor is it accurately describing the incident, unless you were there and were one of the actors in MDQ. Every effort is made to protect the actors and crew of Ogunquit productions and human error is always a variable no matter where you work…or walk in Mid-town Manhattan. (edited)

During their production of Million Dollar Quartet they nearly killed two actors in front of a matinee performance when a 16 foot light tower came smashing down on to Jerry Lee's piano during the finale. AEA did nothing, Ogunquit PH did nothing, and the Music Hall did nothing.

I am currently working a production here. From the start of our contract we had unreliable internet, if any at all in our cast housing for around two weeks. They FINALLY got it back up and running, but now every time there's a little rain, the network goes down again. It's unacceptable that a major AEA house is leaving its cast members without internet as often as we have in the year 2023. Also, for a theater of this much wealth, it's shocking how poor some of the accommodations are. Constant electrical issues in the housing, lack of kitchen supplies, and very cheap beds with minimal bedding. And the dressing rooms.. they are ridiculously small and crammed. It's always extremely difficult to navigate the tight quarters backstage, and there is no green room. The production quality is superb, but it would be great if they valued giving better work and living conditions to their employees. (edited)

I absolutely loved working here! The town is beautiful, the theater is stunning, and they treat their actors very well. I loved my accommodations, complete with a fire pit my cast and I would use every night after our shows.
