Peach State Music Theatre
- Performer
This was a wonderful contract with very kind and talented performers, technicians, choreographers, and directors. FIrst of all, the bad news: the pay is terrible. Like I mean, unlivable if you are in the ensemble. I was an actor/tech so I got payed $25 extra a week to work in the costume shop for a lot of hours. I could never eat out or spend extra money on fun things, which was a bummer, and there wasn’t time with the rehearsal and performance schedule to get another job to support myself. My expenses were less back then so I was able to swing it, but I definitely couldn’t now. The housing is great! You stay in these brand new dorms that are very nice. The ensemble members get their own room, share a bathroom with one other person and share a kitchen with the whole floor (which, yes, was a nightmare). The lead contracts get their own apartment-style dorms, which were really nice as well. The schedule is grueling but the quality of shows, tech, and talent is top-notch. The community loves the theatre and your shows are sure to always be packed. It’s a small town, but not so small that there isn’t a Walmart or Chipotle. You’ll have all the necessities nearby. The artistic leadership has changed recently, so that has altered the attitude within the company - this is just something to be aware of. This is also a great place to get discovered by other theatres in the area as I had several castmates book other shows when artistic staff from nearby theatres saw them perform here. This place is connected to a university so it hires lots of its own students as well as some professors. So expect to be around really seasoned and really green college-age performers. You can learn a lot from the older cast members though, if you make an effort! Overall, great production and talent quality, horrible pay. (edited)
