The Gateway

Okay, first I wanna say: overall I enjoyed my time at Gateway, and I probably would have had an even better time under different personal circumstances, nicer weather, and a better show. No matter where you go, what is "acceptable" is relative. Folks hated the kitchen in the reviews below... When I was there, the cast and crew were usually very respectful of the space and did their best to keep things clean. I didn't witness the piles of dirty dishes and bugs that others did (of course, it wasn't summer). I won't pretend that I spent a lot of time there or relied on cooking complicated meals - I lived on easy stuff I could keep in my room with my mini-fridge and shelf space. Short walk from the tiny town area where they have a coffee shop, CVS, pizza place, general store and more. The vibes are very "summer theatre camp"... and the crew is a little college-theatre for my tastes, but they're all very kind and hard working. The theatre is old, very "barn" like. Don't expect fancy shindigs anywhere on property. This place has "charm" ... The housing is ... the housing. There IS a mold problem - more prevalent in some parts of the house. Some rooms are certainly nicer than others. All those rooms, 4 bathrooms - The experience you have will simply depend on the people you live with. Sometimes a shower was a little messy or something, but nothing too bad. INVEST IN SHOWER SANDALS. The production quality varies from very to pretty good. The cast is all NY talent, but it was a strong mix of seasoned pros and fresh-outta-college green performers. This dynamic can be hard to live with for long runs, but ultimately, everyone was kind. You take the train in from NYC and they'll take you back to the train weekly for your day(s) off after the matinee. You can sign up to drive the company car to make trips to the grocery store, gym, and more. The Company Management can be a little aloof and seem to strive for "good enough" conditions to get to the next show... BUT the company manager himself is a GEM. Sweetest man around, really cares about everyone who comes thru the door. The theatre really keeps his plate full, so while sometimes he can be overwhelmed, he's so caring and will get the job done. He also makes sure to provide snacks during tech and is just the sweetest man. So much can be said about working with NICE people. I'd give the place 4 stars if the conditions were just nicer.

I wish I could leave zero stars for this theater. I worked on a production with gateway earlier this year and the management there is completely soulless and hateful. The resident music director Andrew constantly changes his mind about what he wants, and absolutely reams into the cast and creative team any chance he gets. Worst part is he never smiles. He has fired his associates left and right due to them “not agreeing with his vision” and will actively criticize people’s choices with no filter. He strives for perfection from everyone on the show, yet he cannot play piano past a fifth grade level. The artistic director Paul could be even worse. He will actively approve changes to all of the shows that break their contract with MTI/Concord and have made so many illegal changes to their production of “In The Heights”, Lin-Manual would personally sue them if he found out what they did. If you think about working for gateway playhouse, you’re better off performing at a children’s birthday party. Somehow they’re more mature than the bafoons running gateway. 0/10

The best part of this experience was the cast & crew… but even then, we had some problems. 26 people shared four bathrooms in the actor housing, regardless of equity status. The company car broke before we even arrived, and we were required to share a big white church van. Sometimes the bathrooms were out of order or had drain worms & ants in it. The kitchen building had two stoves, three microwaves, and three refrigerators/freezers. All of this was shared with almost 40 people between the cast and crew. It was always dirty and sticky. Cups, plates, and bowls were always missing or left dirty in the sinks. They asked cast members to learn additional understudy tracks without any extra pay. They did not have the proper coverage and swings for this production. They typically spring internal coverage on the cast once you are here. There’s no proper places to warm up and often times you’re fighting against the acting school for a place to vocalize/rehearse/self tape. We cycled through stage managers and crew members a lot. Many people were unprofessional and lacked experience. Also, there was barely a plan when COVID went through our cast. THINGS I LOVED ABOUT GATEWAY: the pool, the craft service table during first day of rehearsal & throughout tech week, proximity to the city, wonderful audience every performance (edited)

I have only worked at the Gateway once as a side job but I truly appreciate the hospitality I received while being there. Everyone went out of their way to say hello and chat with me, show me around, and answer questions. Something I found very kind was that I was curious about the theaters because I had only been working in the shops and asked if someone could show me around. The main TD said "Sure!" and walked me around the entire property which was really nice. I also can't say this enough, they gave me an ice pop break which was nice. The day after I had finished working there their general manager reached out to me and saw that I had applied to the gateway in the past and asked if I wanted to be on their over-hire list which I thought was very kind of them. Overall, very organized, accommodating, and nice quality work.

Had an AMAZING time at The Gateway! They brought together a wonderful group of performers who all gelled and bonded really well making for a great experience. Got to perform at the theatre in Patchogue which was beautiful, newly renovated dressing rooms and backstage and beautiful house, and lots to do in town before or between shows! Familiar with the theatre on Gateway's campus as well and it's also super cute, more barn vibes, but still nice! Housing is typical summer stock staff house vibes, with rehearsal spaces on the same lot. Walkable main street in Bellport with some cute spots! Would defintiely go back!
