Theatre by the Sea
- Intern
In these reviews I will be covering compensation, role responsibilities/expectations, housing, amenities (if any were included), the administrative team which will include company management, the general manger, and artistic directors, and lastly the producer(s) if any interaction was had. Creative teams may or may not be included, but only if necessary as they are moving variables and are not directly related to the theaters themselves (unless they are resident directors/choreographers). Administrative teams and producers will be ranked by the following system: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. I will be not listing any names to prevent any possible doxing. This experience was from 2013 before TBTS gave out EMC points. This means I did not receive any points though that is no longer relevant information. Compensation: $200/wk before taxes + you are guaranteed to be cast in 2 shows for their season. the $200 was given as salary and also expected to cover your food for the week. Considering the amount of work required, this is absolutely unacceptable regardless of whether or not it is an internship. You are still being hired to work for a company away from your home base, therefore you should be compensated accordingly. Exposure, connections, and experience is not an acceptable form of compensation. It is exploitation of young adult artists that do not know any better. Role responsibilities/expectations: We were expected to do what was assigned, whenever it was assigned. We assisted the technical crew in cleaning paint brushes, setting up the theater's sound equipment through the theater, scrubbing and cleaning all of the theater's chairs, vacuuming the theater, setting up the set as well as striking the set, cleaning the prop basement, painting, and more. As an intern, part of your compensation was also being included in 2 shows. All requiring 8 hour rehearsals/6 days a week. Housing: We were housed in the staff house behind the theater. No AC was provided or allowed in the rooms, so when it would get really hot we would move our mattresses down to the restaurant connected to the house to sleep in the AC. We shared housing with the technical crew. There were 10 of us in total in the house. We all shared 1 bathroom and kitchen. The bathroom provided also served as the handicap bathroom for the restaurant connected to the house. Amenities: Wi-fi was provided and the staff house was a 3 minute walk away from a private beach. That was the best part of the entire contract. Administrative Team Overall Rank: Good Company Management: Fair - responsive, friendly, a bit disorganized, but overall helpful General Manager/Artistic Director: Good - oversaw intern team, attentive, communicative Producer: Fair - overall interaction was limited; fair rating is based on inappropriate behavior towards male cast members. 3 stars. Overall, being near the beach and creating a community of friends made for a fun albeit interesting summer. We were told that the director of one show did not want to work with us and would have preferred to have chosen his own interns. That made for a not-so-fun experience being in that show. The cabaret nights are a lot of fun and as someone has said, you do get drink tickets for the songs you sing. As interns, we were treated as though we should have been grateful to be there and therefore we did not deserve a lot of respect, which was disappointing. I hesitate to encourage you to work here, but as always the choice is yours. Best of luck!

I did the acting internship a few years back and far as internships go I feel like it's a great opportunity for performers to get professional experience, meet great people, and have a blast on the beach all summer! Rhode Island is beautiful and I will always want to go back! Get a hold of a car if you can if you're staying at the motel you're a little stranded without it, but if you opt to live in the staff house you're on the same grounds as the theatre and steps from the private beach, although these rooms aren't as cute as the motel. The theatre is a little kooky, but pulls off the weathered charm, dressing room area is up pretty steep flights of stairs (and ladders) but we made it work! And if they get the weekend cabarets back up and running they are SO fun. A free drink for every song you sing so I drank for free all summer. Amazing food in the area, go visit Newport if you can! Bowling alley, beaches, we even visited Boston on a day off. It was like the most fun summer camp, got to go there with some of my best friends and met even more and just had a ball in the barn all summer long!
