Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre

The theatre has new changes & amazing owners. I’m super excited to be working here again. The people are so sweet & kind to work with. I know in the past black mold was a big issue here but they have upgraded the cast house & cleaned it up. The management here now is top tier. There finally isn't one person doing everything here which helps a lot. I’m super excited to be joining them here again. They bring many opportunities to make tons of money. I was concerned after hearing some negative comments but realized that there are so many positive changes here. Now i love it. The town is adorbs & so many cute small places around us. So excited for this upcoming bright year! (edited)

I’ve worked at Wohlfahrt Haus off and on over the years most recently for the 2024 christmas show, and I can confidently say the vibe right now is truly next level. The new owners are dedicated to making the theatre and cast house the best they can be, and the management team is fantastic. While the theatre has struggled in the past, things are finally turning around—one person is finally not doing all of the jobs... seems like it might be a decent place to be at this point.

I love this theatre! They have brand new owners eager to make some great changes. The cast house as well as the theatre have had lots of new improvements and renovations recently and look amazing! Super kind people and lots of ways to do other work to get extra money if needed. Would highly recommend working at this theatre!

Would not recommend working here to anyone. The environment is very toxic (figuratively and literally). MOLD. There is mold in the cast house and no one will do anything about it. They will gaslight you & tell you it’s just dust… The AD doesn’t know how to delegate any duties and is spread too thin. He comes across as one of the nicest people at first, but will turn on you in a second. The housing is horrible. Wytheville is a very cute town in the beautiful mountains of Virginia. The pay is pretty good and if you decide to work here you should negotiate for better pay and a travel stipend. Overall I would not recommend working here to anyone.

Mixed feelings about this place. While I think the AD is one of the nicest people, he often takes advantage of people's kindness. Pay is average - you CAN negotiate higher. To me though, the pay is not worth living in a black mold infested house (if I could attach photos I would). It is also a little uncomfortable that the stage hand and his wife (who work in the kitchen) live in the basement. They are nice and harmless, but are often outside smoking and have to come upstairs to use the restroom. Also...unclear if they actually get rights for their book shows. I never saw a libretto there from Concord or MTI and they were always sent virtually. This is obviously not confirmed - maybe just do your research if offered a book show on upcoming shows through the rights company? There is also just a lot of drama within the way theatre is run itself and the town. The shows feel very thrown together because there is not a lot of rehearsal time...you have a weird amount of downtime for 2 weeks to get a show up and running before tech. There have also been issues with older men who are locals and asked to perform in the shows spending time with young girls in their dressing room (luckily there are no kids in this upcoming season) but very uncomfortable. This was brought to the ADs attention and NOTHING was done about it besides the AD asking the kids if they liked performing there. Again, AD is nice but he takes on every single job so a lot of things fall through the cracks... I'll also say it again - BLACK MOLD. (edited)

Okay this theatre space is really pretty. Like… gorgeous. It’s a wonderful stage to perform on and the company knows how to make it look amazing. It’s a family owned business and the man who runs the company is very kind. And I worked with some incredibly talented people here. The rehearsal process was odd, as it was a few weeks of only a few hours a day (which was lovely) then one of the most insane and hellish tech weeks I’ve ever experienced. The show opened though, as it always does. There is no set or costume shop here and the AD just grabs costumes from a back room at the theatre. When things break, there is no one to repair them, although he does take the costumes home weekly to wash them at his house which is great and necessary. The dressing rooms are… well-loved and we had a friendly mouse who lived in ours. The tech crew is one man who, let’s just say, should not be in charge of safety. An actor was seriously injured during one of the shows as a result of his carelessness. The rest of the tech staff is local high schoolers so you never know what you’re gonna get from them. While the artistic director was very nice, I had several uncomfortable and disappointing interactions with him overall. The music director was a local music teacher who was not great and made the show learning process incredibly difficult. The performers at this place are all incredibly skilled. Probably some of the most talented people I’ve ever shared the stage with and they’re all off doing amazing things now. However, some (not all) of the regulars who are cast in show after show here were rude and entitled. They would use their status as regulars to make newcomers pander up to them since they were friends with the artistic director and could suggest you for future shows. The new cast members they brought in for my show there, though, were some of the kindest and most giving humans I’ve ever had the pleasure to perform with. Pay is low and MAKE SURE you negotiate it higher. They can pay more - you just have to ask for it. You can also make extra money here by working as a server. That’s honestly how I made most of my money on this contract. It’s so incredibly draining but the tips are AMAZING and you go home with at least $100 per show (which, on top of your weekly acting salary and considering you work 6 days a week, ain’t too bad). Cast housing was difficult. My first few weeks they didn’t have room for us in the cast house so we stayed in the Days Inn. The annoying part was we were literally kicked out every few days before the AD would realize he still didn’t have room and we’d have to move back into the hotel. You do get your own room but the house is old, dirty, moldy, and cramped. And many of the rooms were separated by a glorified piece of cardboard with absolutely NO sound proofing. The town around the theatre is cute and has just the right amount of grocery stores, restaurants, and coffee shops. The people and housing just made it a really hard contract to complete. Overall, though, some great artistic work being done here and you can make BANK if you’re a server. And the space is gorgeous. (edited)

Mixed experience here. Some really talented artists and actors work here. You can make good money IF you wait tables, which is a big time commitment and can drain your soul. The technical aspects of this theater leave something to be desired. The mics are old and need updating. The sets were constructed by a couple of unqualified people who worked there and had a tendency to fall apart. The AD, George, is very kind, maybe too kind? He lets certain people work there who shouldn’t have a job, much less be in charge of people’s safety. When I was there we didn’t have a stage manager and we had to be our own costume crew (I had to quick-rig all my own costumes and furnish my own mic belt). Rehearsals are usually only a few hours a day until tech, which can be a nightmare. The cast house has a lot of rooms, and two full kitchens, but also really needs some updating and repairs which just don’t happen. And if you’re expecting great communication before or after the contract? Good luck. I didn’t know where I was going or what was going on until two hours before I got there, and have been totally unable to get much response since working there, even though I was basically promised another contract after.
