$225-300 a week is low for America at large, but above average as a weekly paycheck in Hillsboro, Indiana, especially when rent isn't a factor. Housing is safe, but very no frills. You don't have mold, there's a solid kitchen, and the showers are great but the only window is one in the living room that the city may or may not know about. A car or a lot of ways to occupy yourself in one space are essential. If you're a college student or recent grad looking to gain credits, it's a LOT better than a lot of places that you'll hear about a lot sooner because they've historically had more money to put into marketing. A new set of owners and Artistic Director from when I last worked there, and it seems to only be improving as an organization. The previous owner only saw Myers as a something to benefit and take money from, to the detriment of those she hired, from the AD, down to the Waiters. She ran the last AD ragged until he was a traumatized, livid version of the artist and visionary it was clear he was hired to be. Whatever new team they utilize will benefit from a fresher approach and more considerate management. Once again especially if you're a young artists hoping to gain credits and experience.

Echoing what others have said: extremely low pay, and the creatives don't seem to appreciate your efforts at all. Like you should be lucky to work for 225 a week (a check that frequently bounced). Housing is depressing. Literally one window. You'll also get endless passive aggressive emails from stage management if things aren't pristine daily (we are talking a single dish in the sink. It borderline feels like you're on Big Brother or something). Power also went out frequently. The AD is never there, and can be really off putting when he is. Witnessed him having temper tantrums on more than one occasion. The other creatives seem really crestfallen and miserable working for him. This tends to set the tone for the rest of your contract. The talent can be great... lots of trauma bonding going on, and I've made lifelong friends. Just don't expect to love anything else. Indianapolis is a great city, and I was thankful to be able to escape there. HIGHLY recommend a car. You'll be miserable without one.

My experience at Myers. Let me first say , that not everyone’s experience will be the same. To those that wrote glowing reviews, I am glad to hear that you had positive experiences . That being said, my experience was very different. For some actors, Myers Theatre is as toxic as they come. It’s every actor’s nightmare. Let’s start with the easy stuff. The bounced paychecks. I would challenge anyone on this thread to be ok with and to give a pass to a company that was giving you bad checks as your payment. Beyond the obvious issues of needing income it also really messed up my accounts. The real hero here is the staff member that used to pay us out of pocket when this happened. Not all the banking charges imposed for depositing a bad check but at least what we were owed. The lack of boundaries. To the staff member that thought it was ok to barge into actor housing anytime they felt like it with childish tirades was abusive. If you have a problem with an actor you use the contracted times and a professional space to deal with these. Cornering someone in actors housing was out of line. Again i challenge all those that wrote glowing reviews to tell me this is ok. The most serious issue was the sexual harassment by the AD. Showing up to actors rooms uninvited , and inappropriate behavior and comments . I was actually afraid for the the safety of the minors that work at the theatre. I filed a complaint and let the (now former) owner know that they had a potentially very dangerous situation on their hands. He’s still there so it seems nothing was done. To the (now former owner and new owners)When actors and staff come to you with stories of abuse, complaints that someone is making them uncomfortable, complaints that someone is not respecting their boundaries, LISTEN TO THEM and BELIEVE THEM. The new owners need to clean house and restaff. I know of several actors that will never return to this theatre until this has been done .

This is my second season at Myers Dinner Theater. I have been involved as an actress and/or music director for five productions. I have always been treated with kindness and respect by every member of the production staff and have always found them to be very professional. As far as the audiences for "The Sound of Music," most of the over 20 performances were very well attended. Some audiences were small, but every audience was treated to the same great show. I worked with the children almost constantly as music director and also as an actress on stage. Dion and TJ we're always patient and accommodated their different learning styles. Many parents openly thanked Dion and TJ for allowing their child to be part of this wonderful show! Many of these children are coming back to perform in the summer youth productions and "Annie" this fall. They can't wait! There are high expectations for the actors. The directors have specific visions for the shows they direct. I have always felt that I was part of a team effort, and that the doors were always open for discussion before or after rehearsals. No one is working harder than Dion, TJ, and Jessica to bring a professional experience to the actors and the audiences at this theater. I am definitely not perfect as an actress, but I have never been treated poorly when my work needs improvement. I have been given detailed notes and encouragement. The facility has a historic feel which is interesting and charming. It is an old building and needs some updates. I have heard the staff speak about improvements coming to the facility, and I am confident these things will happen. The kitchen is under a different management than it was during "The Sound of Music." The food is excellent, and there is professional efficiency in the kitchen area. I do not know if any details about actors serving as wait staff have changed or how tips are distributed. That is not part of my experience. I will agree with other reviews that pay seems low, and most actors have a second source of income. For this reason, my true rating would probably be a 4.5. Housing is provided for out-of-town actors as well as a free meal after every performance. If you bring a professional attitude, a good work ethic and welcome constructive criticism, you will get along great with the staff at Myers.

My daughter was the youngest cast member of The Sound of Music, and it was her very first time EVER on any stage. She was welcomed by all of the cast and crew, and everyone was so patient with her. Even when she goofed off backstage or made some questionable decisions. She learned so much throughout the experience, and found her confidence and learned how to better follow directions. Since this production, she’s really been a different kid. She still talks about all of her friends from Myers, and hopes to be in another production. I was at every practice, and was either backstage or in the audience for every show, and I never saw anything but encouragement and support from everyone on the cast and crew. I would encourage anyone thinking about working with Myers to go for it, and hope that my daughter will able to return again.

Well, we are quite surprised to see a little theater in our neck of wood! Coming from many theaters in Branson, Missouri, this theater can compete their show. They are highly appreciated being in the middle of nowhere, that gives our local and neighboring town a place to go nearby. My son has a great experienced working with the Myers Dinner Theater! He grown maturely for being surrounded with professionalism, respect and great talents. Cast has so many impressive professional backgrounds from all over America. My son earns more money working here than at McDonald’s. He misses working at Myers especially at the end of the project all cast are coming out in tears of joy and sadness. Obviously they bonded as one happy family with the director and the Myers Management Family. Every show I drop my son, we could hardly find parking spot, buses there, big and small. Many vehicles from different states or town, I’m in aww where the heck they advertise their show to have this many people coming to see MDT show! I watched it personally 3x only few seat at the back are empty and the crowds are good, they loved it! Feels like Branson show to me again. DeJavu! I even bought two couples ticket’s to share to my special folks. The boutique has so many unique outfit for a Walmart price! I can’t believe it! I bought several of it. I’m so Thankful to the MDT management that my son survived without getting fired or even warning. I was leery and at the edge reading the super duper strict rules and policy in the contract. I brief my son to follow the rules and regulations there’s warning, fines and strikes 3 you are fired! That’s sure straight up his act and gained knowledge and power. I feel proud and I thanks the management for being patience to the newbie cast and their guidance. The most memorable experienced that he can treasured for life! We love MDT! More Power to your business! I heard there’s new restaurant managing the dinner show! My husband went back to see the show after Sound Of Music but my son and I is at Indy! He really enjoyed that show and the new food variety. Can’t wait to see you guys again maybe in the Autumn. God Bless MDT!

I've had great experiences there. I have done 3 shows and can't wait to do my fourth show this fall. It is a great place to work you are treated with respect and professionalism. Even though the theatre isn't equity, they adhere to equity rules.....very professional. If you get a chance to work there, do not hesitate, take the job and have a wonderful experience. You will be working with the best! (edited)

My daughter had a wonderful experience performing in The Sound of Music at Myers in 2023. She loved all her co-stars and made many great friends. The creative team was respectful and kind towards her, and it was a terrific learning experience for her. As a parent I appreciated the organized and helpful communications from the creative team and then from the stage manager. I also hung out backstage with the kiddos for some of the performances (helping with quick changes, keeping food away from costumes, etc.) and only saw positive interactions between actors and actors/crew/staff. My daughter received a free meal (good food!) after every performance, and we were also given housing for a few weekends of the run to save us mega driving time even though we'd not originally requested housing. Everyone who worked at the theatre was just so kind to both of us. She can't wait to go back, and I'd have no hesitations in allowing that.

Ohhhhhhhhhh Myers. I honestly can't believe this place is still open. It barely sold anything for the freaking Sound of Music, and if that show can't sell...what can? Audiences are small, meek, and CONSERVATIVE. They will pay Actors $250 a week or less. You cannot barter, you will never make more than that as long as miss namesake is in control of the funds. There is no appreciation or respect for the actors from the Artistic Director or the production manager. Both are incredibly dramatic and bitter people, and you will constantly be reminded by the AD that actors are replaceable, lazy humans. Any slip-up or frustration an actor may have is seen as the utmost transgression, and they will never forget it. Even something as small as having a costume issue will be misconstrued as the actor being an a** or a diva. Now, I wasn't an actor, but I was there for majority of rehearsals and all of the shows, and the mistreatment of actors that I witnessed was shocking. These young, malleable actors would lose confidence with the way the AD would react to them. The older actors would leave upset and frustrated. There was never a day when the two didn't have a problem with SOMEONE in the cast. I even witnessed someone get fired without even being communicated with. He found out he was fired because the AD posted his character on an audition site. Being on the other side of the table, I constantly heard the negativity spewing from the two aforementioned leaders, and I felt so badly for the actors. They are not paid enough, they are in the middle of nowhere, and nothing they did was ever "right" in the director and manager's. I feel terribly for those who they constantly spewed hate about, because in reality, those actors deserved better. If you do work there, take into account that you will be on eggshells the entire time you are there. Contracts are 6-ish weeks for actors, and they don't often hire anyone else outside of actors and an SM. The owner of the theater is a TERRIBLE business owner and is never on site except to see the show opening night. She picks favorites, is very conservative, and takes a portion of servers tips. This grown @$$ woman, in her 80's, is taking tips from her workforce. This is a self-serve dinner theater, so actors and crew are not required to serve and they hire out for wait staff. I do believe that the previous AD made this place a lot more tolerable, and it's very sad that people are refusing to come back because the atmosphere has changed so drastically. Be wary. Be thoughtful. I wouldn't encourage actors to work here. Stage Managing is alright, but you still won't make a lot of money. It might be a better situation for invited directors, because you may receive actual respect from those in charge. Good luck, kids! (edited)
