Aida Cruises
- Performer
I was a lead vocalist for Aida and 'all in all' I had a really good time and have accepted another contract with them, but like any job there are major pros and cons. Pros: -The itinerary's can be really nice. You can see some really amazing places. -The contracts are shorter than most usually from 5.5-8.5 months. -We don't have many side duties. Meaning unless we have IPM we can almost always go out in port. And once the shows are up and running you have a lot of free time to enjoy ship life. -The casts are super diverse and you end up making friends from all over the world. We had performers from 6 different countries in my cast. -The shows are really fun with great music. And management is generally pretty open if your cast wants to put together an extra concert for fun. -You get housed in guest cabins for the rehearsal process. then move into crew cabins when you start performing. -Single cabins for singers which are fairly spacious with a totally doable amount of storage. Plenty of room for two big suitcases under the bed. You just share the bathroom with 1 other person (typically another singer) Cons: -Since covid they've gotten rid of their shoreside rehearsal studio and now we rehearse on the boat. The boat is not built for this. So there's very little space to make this happen. And if you happen to get the actual stage for rehearsal time, you're rehearsing in front of passengers. Which i found to be highly stressful as a 1st timer. Management also will advertise our rehearsals in the daily schedule for the passengers so they can come watch. -Pay as a lead vocalist is significantly less than it would be for the same job on a US cruise line. -They pay you using this Carnival Corp owned debit card which you then need to transfer to your main bank. Its silly and takes an extra fee from us. Plus your bank will probably take a chunk of your pay as a foreign transfer fee. -Not all countries are up to speed with americans when it comes to both body positivity and racial/ cultural sensitivity. We had some major issues where both choreographers and fellow dancers were making comments at other dancers for their size. They also didn't see the problem with doing an asian themed dance while wearing rice hats to advertise the Asia itinerary. Also for one of our MainStage shows all the females wear little afro curls hair pieces. Many ensemble members from the past have complained about this with higher ups and its still part of the required costuming.
