Cedar Point
- Performer, within last year
PROS: fun environment high quality production value CP employee perks nice area CONS: a few bad eggs in management 30 shows/week okay housing (not the worst, not the best) This is a good contract for college students or recent grads, and many CP alums have had success in the industry (cruises, tours, Broadway, etc.), but the contracts (especially summer) are unsustainable long-term. The rehearsal process is thorough and I felt an appropriate amount of time to mount a new show. During the summer you can do up to 6 shows/day, 6 days/week and show lengths range from ~15-30+ minutes. Oftentimes, you end up having less than a 30-minute break before your next show. It is exhausting physically and vocally and if you're in a show that performs outside you'll still be performing even if it's 100 degrees. Entry-level pay is $16.25/hour or day rate of $130, but those who have worked there longer get paid up to $20/hour. From what I know, seasons other than summer you're working only a few days a week (which is more sustainable physically but not $$) so some people have to get side jobs. One of the main rehearsal spaces is a garage with a couple of warped rolling mirrors and no AC and it took WAY too long for us to get any fans just for our director to take the fans for himself because "(the actors) should be hot...they're in rehearsals" but he was sat behind a table all day. Director (who I believe is no longer allowed to direct for Cedar Fair) refused to use the correct pronouns for actors and would yell at actors or physically move them for blocking. Didn't care to learn our names (and would still pronounce some wrong) even tho we were in rehearsals for weeks. The other members of our creative team (choreographer, MD, stage management) were wonderful people and artists who did great work with the show and cared about our welfare. Production quality is pretty stellar, and they're constantly keeping entertainment offerings fresh. They cast really talented people, the level of talent across all shows is astounding. They do internal understudies which gets really complicated when multiple people are out and ensemble members are split tracking like crazy. I believe they used to hire more swings a few years ago but have cut back on that which is disappointing because illness and injuries happen and COVID is still real and spreading healthy cast members too thin can make them get sick or injured too. Costume shop makes costuming anyone above a size 6 so difficult and unflattering (making actors feel bad about themselves). Head of costume dept. would do everything to avoid changing actors' shoes despite actors being in pain 24/7, making them jump through every hoop to get a doctor's note, go to first aid, and talk to supervisors before getting appropriate, quality shoes for the level and amount of physical activity the show requires. Housing is decent. They're 2-3 bedrooms & 1-2 bathrooms with 4-5 people so some people share rooms others don't (rlly nasty spider problem). During the summer it's $12/day and comes out of your paycheck, other seasons it's free. No central AC, only units in some rooms. It's an apartment-style layout with dorm-style furnishings (lofted twin beds, dorm dressers, locker closets, very basic living room furnishings & a TV) there is a full kitchen (microwave, stove/oven, fridge) but they don't supply anything else (pots/pans, plates, utensils, etc.) and certain kitchen items are forbidden (and could be confiscated) like sharp knives (anything that's not a butter knife), blenders, air fryers. They do housing checks pretty regularly and will take anything that's not allowed until you leave and could fire you if they find illegal substances. Maintenance is pretty quick to resolve any issues. Sandusky is a cute town and there's enough stuff to do nearby to keep you entertained on your 1 day off if you don't spend it in recovery. Shoutout to Mr. Smith's Coffee House and Louie's (definitely a bit of a party crowd at CP). There's an island you can get to by (expensive) ferry called Put in Bay, highly recommend. Getting beach access at the park is clutch and getting a tan before work was delightful. CP regularly has fun employee events where you can ride rides after hours and get free stuff/food which is very nice! (edited)

Absolutely loved being here! Adored the people I worked for--they are genuine and kind, and want the best for each performer. I'm giving four stars specifically because housing could be better, but other than that it's a wonderful place to work.

Performed there one summer when I turned 20, it’s a great summer job for college students and professionals alike to build up that Singer/Dancer stamina.
