Holland America Line
- Performer, within last year
If someone is visibly showing up drunk to rehearsals and smells like vodka at rehearsals why was this performer not fired ? He put us all at risk with his ridiculous behavior. And because of him constantly being drunk he couldn’t sing the parts he was cast to do. It was embarrassing.

Overall, apparently one of the better cruise lines to work for as a performer--no safety drill requirements, all guest privileges, no roommates. Definitely a lot of positives in the facilities, the quality of talent, the opportunities for travel, the free food, etc. The contracts are usually not excessively long either (at least for musicians) in comparison to other cruise lines. Go for it if you're interested in making good money for doing what you love and visiting new places along the way. However: keep in mind this is run like a business more than land-based gigs, and there is little tolerance for issues involving injury, vocal exhaustion, mental health, etc. There are very few other performers on the ship so your community is very small, therefore isolating. If you are female-identifying, sexual harassment is rampant. I would recommend ensuring that enjoy the troupe you are with, because being at sea for a long time with strangers can be very emotionally taxing. There was a very traumatic tragedy that happened while onboard during my contract, and it was handled very poorly/little space was provided to us to process it--we were instead asked to just keep performing.
