Leavenworth Summer Theatre
- Performer, 1-3 years ago
First off, I had an amazing summer at Leavenworth, but this was because of the people I worked with, the company itself was a bit of a mess. The pay is horrendous (~250 a week is what I made) and this is NOT including housing, I had to get an additional job just so I could afford basic groceries and rent. The theater helped me find housing and I was fortunate that mine was close to the venues, but some people ended up 30-45 minutes away from the theater with no transportation provided. Everything about the rehearsal and production process was very similar to that of a community theater, which is not necessarily bad, just not what I was expecting/hoping for. My chief complaints with this theater are the fact that they rake in tons of profit on ticket sales but none of this money goes to the performers, technicians, or designers and that they require you to work an additional job on all showdays (ushering, parking, etc) for upwards of an hour to an hour and a half for no additional compensation. Having to basically do customer service up until 5 minutes to curtain was very flustering and stressful. It’s frustrating because this theater has the potential to be an outstanding experience for young actors, it just seems like the board of directors are stuck in the past and are in no rush to treat their people the way they should.
