Northern Sky Theatre
- Intern, 1-3 years ago
The people at this theater are SO kind and thoughtful, some of the kindest in the biz, and Door County is an absolutely beautiful place to live. If you are an actor looking to do their internship, it's a great first experience for a college student. But you should be aware going into it that it is not a performance-heavy internship most of the time. You will be understudies for the mostly Equity cast, helping run rehearsals and working backstage. There are understudy rehearsals with the stage manager (who is fabulous, great at his job, and the nicest man) once you get a little bit into the season. If you aren't down with nature, this isn't for you. The theater that the interns work at is outdoors, and you will be in the middle of a state park, rain or shine! Every once in a while they offer an intern a full-time performer position, but you will still be responsible for backstage duties (putting out prop towers, setting up the stage, sweeping, mopping, helping with costumes, etc.). Your housing is VERY nice and free, but a 30 min drive from the theater. Overall, as long as you are aware going in that this internship will likely not give you a lot of chances to perform, you'll have a good time. (This was a bit difficult for me, but for the right person, it is a great fit!) You have the opportunity to learn a LOT about professional theaters and gain skills that will make you a more well-rounded performer.
