MSU Summer Theatre

This summer was one of the worst I've ever had. They cast a mix of professional actors as well as members of the community. While the community members are SO lovely, I cannot say the same for the staff. The most positive person I worked with there was a guest director (not affiliated with MSU Summer Theatre otherwise), and another guest director who now works for the university (he was really awesome and positive, too). While you are contracted for the shows, you work as the crew during the day and for shows you're not in. To put it plainly, you're really overworked. There is almost *no* crew otherwise...and the heads of each tech department have little to no experience, and do not take the time to properly teach you, because they really don't have it. There were inappropriate comments made about my body from the head of costumes (a mom in the community) and snide remarks made by the artistic director about my work in scenery...I tried my best (I've never worked in a professional scene shop before). Management's kids works in the company so be prepared for some favoritism, and if you're a woman, be prepared to get hit on by one of his sons. Management is judgmental and selfish. I had great roles and it definitely helped to build my resume, but it wasn't worth it. My fellow cast mates and members of the community were the highlight, in addition to the two guest directors mentioned above. The housing was good as they were dorms on the college campus. This theatre is really a community theatre, and there's nothing wrong with that.
