Shadowbox Live
- Performer, 1-3 years ago
If you are a self-respecting, professional performer, RUN FAR AWAY from this horrific workplace. Here's what you need to know: -Pay comes out to less than $400 weekly, and there is no housing provided. You have to relocate to Ohio for this job and make basically no money, and somehow figure out paying rent on this inhumane salary. Meanwhile, members of leadership are making $80-90K annually. -This is a full-time schedule with no healthcare benefits, barely any paid time off the entire year -Abuse from management: prepare to be ridiculed, yelled at, condescended towards, diminished, and mocked. There is no functional HR department. -Casting: it is impossible to be cast in anything that features your talent, as most of the shows are pre-cast and seniority always prevails. 50+ year old adults are consistently playing teens and people in their 20's, despite the company having plenty of age-appropriate casting options, who simply aren't cast because they've worked at Shadowbox for less than a decade. -This company has a longstanding culture of sexual abuse, well-documented in the news. Read it here: https://www.columbusmonthly.com/story/lifestyle/2020/04/01/shadowbox-s-metoo-reckoning/1411559007/ ^ The attempts in this article from the current CEO to distance herself from this culture of abuse and misconduct is ridiculous at best and violent at worst, and I can personally vouch for a continued experience of sexual misconduct and inappropriate relationships happening in the space. I can't believe I ever wasted time working at this excuse of a theatre. I left with damaged self-esteem, uncontrolled anger from the suppression and general bullshit, and negative money. You are better off unemployed, working in the service industry, or just continuing to train and audition. Nothing about this job is worth it. Spare yourself the damage and shine your light where it will be celebrated, not destroyed.
