Four Corners Musical Theatre
- Performer, within last year
This job is confusing, to say the least. I almost rated it 4 stars, but wanted to be extremely honest about the environment at this theatre. I’ve done a few shows here and I’ll try to break down what I’ve seen. For one, the pay is really solid. It’s all non-equity but it’s funded by the city, so they have a huge budget. As an actor playing very small roles, I was paid a stipend that broke down to $500 a week or so. They also will pay you to be a cast driver if you bring your own car. Additionally, they will negotiate your rate the more you work there. The housing is the best I’ve ever had. During non-summer shows, they put basically everyone in Airbnbs and they are extremely nice. In the Summer, you are either put in an Airbnb or in the local college’s dorm. These dorms are also nice, as far as dorms are concerned. They’re bare, but if you bring what you need, they aren’t bad. And they’re still better than most of the housing I’ve had on contracts. The shows themselves are…just okay. In the Summers they employ huge casts of locals mixed with the professionals which causes a large difference in talent level. However, that doesn’t bother me, as the Summers are meant to be a mentoring time for more inexperienced performers. But…even the non-summer shows are just okay. The sets at this theatre are extremely underwhelming. The costumes are as well. Additionally, I feel the need to speak on the talent that is hired. The AD speaks of what he calls his “Core Company.” These are the performers that get hired for every show as long as they want to come back. I don’t mind this idea generally, but these core members are always forced into large roles, even if they do not fit them. This makes for some inconsistency in the quality of performance. The choreography of the shows is sadly very mediocre as well. The choreographer is very sweet, but because she is also a resident creative, she is brought back for every show, even if she doesn’t have a vision for the show or the training to choreograph a certain show. Additionally, the treatment from the head of the Creative team varies significantly from person to person. The AD is…old. And perhaps not in his best mind anymore. Even so, his treatment of certain actors can be very problematic and judgmental, especially women performers. While his treatment of myself and some other performers, especially men, are treated well. He is not unkind to every woman by any stretch, but it does seem that when he is unkind, it’s always a woman. Take that as you will. Altogether, I think because of the pay and housing, this is a theatre I would come back to, especially when I really need some cash. Feel free to reply if anyone has questions or comments or anything! Hope this helps.
