Shakespeare in Delaware Park

Pretty good experience overall. The contract ran July-August and rehearsals started in June, so the show took up basically my entire summer, but the staff and cast were friendly and good to work with, so it wasn't a huge deal. Rehearsal started in the fancy local touring house before we moved outside to the Hill. It's...outdoor Shakespeare. Subject to the elements, under the hot sun with not much shade on stage (although the hill itself has a lovely tree to lounge under, plus a well-stocked trailer behind the stage (except for the bathrooms...we were only provided with porta pottys next to the trailer that were NOT serviced each week as promised). Tech week on the hill itself is kinda rough, the days are long and even though you get breaks it's quite a physical toll. Shows and audiences are great. There was a night with over 2000 people on the hill, very impressive for a free Shakespeare festival. We didn't dig particularly deep with the text, but this company is much more focused on accessibility than the scholarly aspect of Shakespeare. Only thing keeping it from five stars is the pay. They do offer some Equity contracts, but for the majority of us, it was a minimal stipend. A mere $1200 for a five-week run of a show, 6 shows a week is a TOUGH sell. Plus rehearsals. For the experience, I'd say it's worth it to do once or twice, but unless it was an Equity contract it would be hard to justify that little pay again.
